What it means
What F2 is telling you
F2 on a Viessmann Vitodens means the temperature limiter has tripped. The boiler got hotter than its safety threshold allows and cut out.
As with any overheat fault, the underlying issue is nearly always circulation — the heat is being produced but not carried away fast enough.
Common causes are a failing pump, a sludged system, low pressure, or a blocked heat exchanger. Vitodens units are efficient and tightly engineered, which makes them less tolerant of dirty system water than older boilers.
Before you call
Safe checks you can do yourself
- Check system pressure is between 1 and 1.5 bar
- Check for radiators that are cold at the bottom — a sludge indicator
- Make sure no isolation valves have been left closed
- Reset once only; repeated overheating needs an engineer
Never remove the boiler casing or work on the sealed combustion chamber yourself — by law that’s Gas Safe registered engineers only. If you smell gas, call 0800 111 999 immediately.
How we fix it
What we do on the visit
- Pump output tested and replaced where it's underperforming
- System water sampled and a powerflush recommended only where it's genuinely needed
- Heat exchanger checked and cleaned
- Magnetic filter fitted or cleaned and inhibitor restored to protect the new parts
How urgent is it?
Switch the boiler off if it repeatedly overheats and book a visit.
Costs
What a repair costs
Our diagnostic visit is £99 inc VAT and it comes off the bill if we carry out the repair. We give you a fixed price before touching anything — no hourly rates, no surprises on the invoice.
We’re Gas Safe registered, Which? Trusted Trader endorsed and rated 4.9 across 206+ reviews. We carry the common Worcester Bosch and Viessmann spares on the van, so most faults are fixed on the first visit rather than booked back in.
Common questions
Are you Viessmann trained?
Yes — we're a Worcester Bosch and Viessmann installer and carry the common Vitodens spares, so most Viessmann faults are fixed on the first visit.
Why do Viessmann boilers need clean system water?
The Vitodens stainless steel heat exchanger has narrow waterways for efficiency. That makes it excellent at extracting heat but less forgiving of sludge, so a filter and inhibitor really do matter.
Will a powerflush fix an F2?
It will if sludge is the root cause. If the pump has failed, flushing achieves nothing — so we test before recommending.
