Boiler banging, kettling or gurgling — what the noise means

Boilers make noise, but they should not make new noise. A change in sound is nearly always the first warning that something is scaling, sticking or starving of flow.

The type of noise is genuinely diagnostic: kettling is scale, banging is usually air or expansion, gurgling is trapped air or a blocked condensate.

Checks you can safely do yourself

Kettling — like a kettle boiling

Limescale or sludge on the heat exchanger causing water to boil locally. Needs a chemical clean or powerflush, not a new boiler.

Gurgling

Trapped air or a partially frozen condensate pipe. Bleed radiators first; in winter, thaw the external condensate pipe with warm (not boiling) water.

Banging on start-up

Often delayed ignition — gas building before it lights. Stop using it and book an engineer; this one is not a wait-and-see.

Humming or vibration

Usually the pump. Annoying rather than dangerous, but a pump on its way out will strand you eventually.

Never remove the boiler casing or touch gas components yourself — that's illegal as well as dangerous. Anything behind the front cover is Gas Safe work.

If that didn't fix it

What it usually turns out to be

Limescale / kettling

Very common in hard-water parts of the West Midlands. Descale or flush.

£250 – £650

Delayed ignition

Gas pooling before ignition. Needs immediate attention.

£160 – £320

Failing pump bearings

Hum, vibration, then eventual seizure.

£280 – £420

Air in the system

Cheapest of all — bleed and top up.

Free – £99

Frozen condensate pipe

Winter classic. Thaw and re-route or lag the pipe so it does not recur.

£99 – £190

Prices inc VAT and include our £99 diagnostic. We confirm the price before any work starts — no surprises on the invoice.

Straight talk

When we'd tell you to replace instead

  • Kettling continues after a full powerflush — the exchanger is scaled internally
  • Delayed ignition on a boiler over 10 years old
  • The noise is accompanied by lockouts and pressure loss

Banging on ignition is the one noise we would ask you to stop using the boiler for until it has been looked at.

Frequently asked questions

Is a noisy boiler dangerous?

Kettling and gurgling are efficiency problems. Banging on ignition is a combustion problem and should be checked promptly.

What is kettling?

Scale or sludge on the heat exchanger makes water boil and steam locally, producing the kettle sound. It shortens boiler life considerably.

Can a powerflush stop kettling?

In most cases yes, particularly when combined with a descaler and a magnetic filter.
