Blocked toilet?

Bowl filling up and draining slowly — or not at all? Most blockages are wipes, too much paper or an object dropped in.

Try the safe steps below. Don't keep flushing — that's how bathrooms get flooded.

Checks you can safely do yourself

Stop flushing

Turn off the isolation valve so the cistern can't refill and overflow the bowl.

Use a plunger

A proper toilet plunger with a flange, pushed slowly then pulled sharply, clears most soft blockages.

Hot (not boiling) water

A bucket of hot water with washing-up liquid poured from waist height can shift paper blockages.

Avoid harsh chemicals

Caustic drain cleaners rarely shift wipes and can damage seals and pipes.
