Toilet keeps running?

A toilet that keeps running or refills every few minutes can waste hundreds of litres a day — and pushes up your water bill if you're metered.

It's almost always a worn flush valve seal or a fill valve that won't shut off.

Checks you can safely do yourself

Look inside the cistern

If water is running over the top of the overflow pipe, the fill valve isn't shutting off. Try bending the float arm down slightly.

Tissue test

Dry the back of the bowl, then hold toilet tissue there. If it gets wet, the flush valve seal is leaking.

Check the float

Make sure the float isn't catching on the side of the cistern or the flush mechanism.

Turn it off for now

Turn the isolation valve on the supply pipe to stop the water until it's repaired.
